- The call
- You are inside, the deadbolt is thrown, and the thumb-turn will not budge. It moved a little last week with some effort. Now the door you walk through every day is a wall, and you need it open.

It is the coldest morning of the winter and the key goes halfway into the side door and stops. There is frost on the face of the cylinder, and the door on the shaded side of the house has done this before.
A jammed lock looks like one problem from outside and is usually one of three inside. The cylinder itself may have seized, packed with grit, corrosion or old grease. The link between cylinder and bolt, the tailpiece or cam, may have broken, which is why a key can spin without doing anything. Or the lock may be healthy and the bolt simply pinned against the strike by a door that has moved. Seized and jammed lock opening starts by telling those apart, because the right answer for one would damage the hardware in another. Once the culprit is known, the door is opened and the cause is repaired.

Scene 1
The frame side gets as much attention as the door side. The locksmith looks at where the bolt meets the strike plate: scuff marks on the plate's edge, a bolt pocket shallower than the roughly twenty-five millimetres a deadbolt needs, paint or filler that has crept into the pocket, and weatherstripping thick enough to hold the door proud of the frame. A dab of chalk on the bolt end shows exactly where it lands. These findings explain a lock that works with the door open and jams when it is shut, and they point to a chisel, a screwdriver and a strike adjustment rather than to anything inside the cylinder.
Scene 2
For mortise locks and lever hardware the work moves from the cylinder to the case. The locksmith gets the door open, then removes the trim and draws the case out of the door edge. Inside, a broken lever return spring, a worn hub, a bent spindle or a latch that has lost its spring is replaced with the matching part, and years of dust and hardened grease are cleaned from the contact surfaces before a fresh application of a grease suited to lock mechanisms. The case is reassembled, the spindle and cylinder are refitted, and lever, key and thumb-turn are each tested so the latch and bolt travel fully.
Scene 3
If the door was the cause, the hinges, strike and seal have been set so the bolt has room. Keeping it that way is a seasonal habit: each spring and fall, try the lock with the door closed and no pressure on it, and snug the hinge and strike screws if the door has begun to drop. Wood keeps moving with humidity, so a door that swells in August may need a touch on the strike in September. A door that suddenly needs a push to lock is telling you early, while the fix is still a screwdriver and not a seized bolt.

Often, and keeping the original hardware is usually worth trying first, since it fits the door and suits the house, though condition and the availability of matching parts decide whether a repair is realistic. The case comes out of the door edge, the decades of dust and hardened grease are cleaned away, a broken spring or worn hub is replaced with a matching part, and the contact surfaces get fresh grease. If a bit key or a cylinder has worn, a new key is cut or the cylinder rebuilt.
It depends on which family the jam belongs to. A bolt bound by the door is often freed in minutes and the adjustment afterwards takes a little longer. A seized cylinder needs patient cleaning before it turns and a bench service after, and a frozen one needs thawing time. A tailpiece swap is short once the door is open; a mortise case service is longer. The locksmith gives a sense of the time once the cause is identified at the door.
The tailpiece is the flat bar that sticks out of the back of a deadbolt cylinder and turns the bolt mechanism when the key turns; on a knob or lever set the equivalent part is a cam or spindle. It carries all the twisting effort, so a bent, worn or broken one is the reason a key can turn without anything happening. It is a small part to replace, it comes in several lengths, and the right length matters.
