Our default for doors in East Gwillimbury is to repair before replacing. A deadbolt that grinds usually needs its strike moved, not a new lock. A cylinder that fights the key often wants fresh pins and a clean. We say so, even when a replacement would be the easier sale, and when replacement really is right we explain why and show you the options in your hand.

  1. Explained first, always. Nothing gets removed, drilled or replaced until you know what and why. That rule holds for a small job as much as a full afternoon.

How a visit goes

Plenty of people call us slightly embarrassed, as if losing a key or snapping one in the cold were a personal failing. It is not; brass wears, pockets have holes, and locks age.

    Call and describe the door

Describe the property, the hardware and what has changed, and the visit starts from what you have seen.

    On our way

Together we list the doors, then decide who should open everything, who should open a floor and who should open one room. That structure becomes the keying chart.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 28 in 100 homes · newer homes
  • About 28% of homes in East Gwillimbury were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Newer homes are built to standard bores and backsets, so nearly any modern deadbolt, lever set or smart lock fits straight on. The locksmith can offer a wide range of hardware knowing it will mount cleanly without new holes.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 81% of homes in East Gwillimbury (2021 Census).Detached homes are exposed to weather on every side, so exterior locks see rain, salt and freezing air directly. Choosing hardware with a good finish and a cylinder that tolerates cold, then lubricating it properly, keeps every door turning through winter.

Curious about the process?

Does the glue trick work?

It is a well-known idea and a poor one. A drop of adhesive on the other half rarely bonds to a piece of brass sitting in a tight keyway, and what it does bond to is the cylinder, the pins and the face of the lock. That film then has to be dissolved before proper extractors can slide in. Keep the halves apart and dry.

Does the finish of the deadbolt matter beyond looks?

It does on an exposed door. Winter salt spray, summer sun and humid air all work on the outside trim, and residential deadbolts carry a finish grade that reflects how well the coating resists them. A lifetime or PVD-style finish stays bright longer on a south-facing or roadside door, while a sheltered porch door can carry any finish you like. Matching the knob or lever below is mostly a matter of taste.

Should every gate on my property share one key, or is it better to keep them separate?

Either can make sense, and the choice usually comes down to who uses which gate and how often. A household that walks through the front and side gates daily generally prefers one key for both, while a gate that only a landscaper or utility worker uses is sometimes kept on its own key deliberately, so lending it out does not hand over access to everything else. The locksmith can lay out both options once every gate on the property has been looked at.

What if my mailbox key snapped off inside the lock?

The broken piece is removed first, using extraction tools that grip and draw it out rather than push it further in, and then the lock is opened the usual way. A key rarely snaps in a lock that is otherwise healthy, so the old cylinder is checked afterward, and if wear caused the break, replacement rather than a repeated repair is the sensible next step.
