A keypad or phone-controlled lock is only as good as the door it sits on. Before anything is mounted on a home in Queensville we check the alignment, the strike and the bore, then set up codes, a mechanical backup and a walkthrough so the household can actually use what was installed.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 28 in 100 homes · newer homes
  • About 28% of homes in East Gwillimbury were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.New homes frequently come with strikes held by short screws into soft framing. Replacing them with longer screws that reach the stud is inexpensive work that adds real strength, and it is one of the first things a locksmith checks in a newer area.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 81% of homes in East Gwillimbury (2021 Census).Garage entry doors on detached houses are often the household's real front door, used more than the formal entry. They deserve the same quality of lock, and keying them alike with the house means one key does the whole daily routine.

Most people think of the lock. Burglars think of the frame. A box strike with long screws into the stud, a reinforcing plate along the door edge and a bolt that reaches deep into the jamb do more against a kick than any cylinder alone.

  1. Layer 1The key

    High Security Locks

You run a home office with client files and equipment, and your insurer has asked what kind of lock is on the door. The honest answer is the builder's knob lock and a light deadbolt from when the house was new.

  2. Layer 2The cylinder

    Lock Replacement & Upgrade

Someone tried the back door while you were away. The jamb is splintered around the strike, the bolt is bent, and the knob turns with a grinding feel.

  3. Layer 3The bolt and strike

    Deadbolt Installation

The old deadbolt has grown lazy. You turn the thumb-turn and the bolt creeps out halfway, then needs a second push with the door pulled tight.

  4. Layer 4The door and frame

    Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Police have come and gone, the occurrence number is on a sticky note, and you are standing in a cold hallway looking at a splintered frame, wondering how the house gets locked before everyone tries to sleep.

Curious about the process?

Will you service a safe that another company installed?

Yes, servicing does not depend on who did the original installation. The locksmith opens the bolt-work, tests the lock through a full cycle, checks the anchoring underneath, and replaces batteries in an electronic lock as needed, regardless of the brand or who fitted it originally. Not knowing the history of the unit just means a slightly more thorough first look before any work begins.

Will the new cylinder fit my existing locks?

Usually. High security cylinders are made in the common formats: key-in-knob and lever, rim, mortise and interchangeable core, and many are designed to drop into popular residential and commercial locks. The locksmith identifies your format and confirms fit before ordering. Where a lock is an odd size or in poor shape, a matching lock body is fitted instead, and the door preparation is reused wherever it is standard.

What is a master key system, in plain terms?

It is a set of keys arranged in levels rather than issued one at a time. An individual change key opens one door, or a small group of doors keyed alike. A sub-master opens a defined group of doors, such as everything on one floor. A single top-level master opens the whole set. The levels are designed around who actually needs each one, then cylinders are pinned to match, so the physical keys follow an organization's real structure instead of years of informal copying.

Does a retrofit into an older building work the same way as new construction?

The device and trim choices are the same, but a retrofit usually has to work with a door and frame that already carry someone else's old hardware preparation. Reading what holes and reinforcement already exist, and choosing a device that can use or cleanly replace them, is a bigger part of a retrofit than of a new opening built with the hardware in mind from the start.
