Leave the pieces to us.

Cold mornings in Mount Albert are hard on tired brass, and a key that has been bending for years finally lets go inside the lock. We remove the snapped piece without harming the cylinder, look at why it failed, and cut a fresh key from the code or the remaining half before we leave. The same crew covers Holt and West Franklin.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 28 in 100 homes · newer homes
  • About 28% of homes in East Gwillimbury were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Recent builds often have steel or fibreglass entry doors rather than solid wood. They resist warping and take hardware well, and a locksmith fitting a deadbolt or reinforced strike works with the door's construction so screws bite into something solid.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 81% of homes in East Gwillimbury (2021 Census).A house has its own front door and its own frame, with nothing shared. That means the homeowner decides everything: the cylinder grade, the strike, the finish, whether to add a smart lock. The locksmith lays out the options and the household picks.

The back door has a deadbolt in name only: a short bolt, a thin brass strike held by two little screws, and a jamb you can flex with your palm. It was fine for a builder's showing.

Most people think of the lock. Burglars think of the frame. A box strike with long screws into the stud, a reinforcing plate along the door edge and a bolt that reaches deep into the jamb do more against a kick than any cylinder alone.

    High Security Locks

You run a home office with client files and equipment, and your insurer has asked what kind of lock is on the door. The honest answer is the builder's knob lock and a light deadbolt from when the house was new.

  2. Layer 2The cylinder

    Lock Replacement & Upgrade

Someone tried the back door while you were away. The jamb is splintered around the strike, the bolt is bent, and the knob turns with a grinding feel.

  3. Layer 3The bolt and strike

    Deadbolt Installation

The old deadbolt has grown lazy. You turn the thumb-turn and the bolt creeps out halfway, then needs a second push with the door pulled tight.

  4. Layer 4The door and frame

    Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Police have come and gone, the occurrence number is on a sticky note, and you are standing in a cold hallway looking at a splintered frame, wondering how the house gets locked before everyone tries to sleep.

Curious about the process?

Do I have to prove I live here before you rekey?

Yes, and it is a step that protects you. A rekey changes who can open the door, so the locksmith confirms the person asking has the standing to decide: photo identification matched to the address for an owner, a lease or bill for a tenant, management records for a superintendent or property manager. Say on the phone what you have so the visit starts smoothly.

Can the garage side door, shed and gate be included?

Yes, and they usually should be, because a side door into the garage is the opening most often forgotten and left on an old key. Any pin-tumbler cylinder on the property can be pinned to the house key if its keyway allows: the man-door into the garage, a shed, a keyed gate latch, and many padlocks. A mailbox lock is usually a small cam lock that is replaced rather than repinned. Mention every opening when you book so the right blanks and cylinders are in the van.

Does the finish of the deadbolt matter beyond looks?

It does on an exposed door. Winter salt spray, summer sun and humid air all work on the outside trim, and residential deadbolts carry a finish grade that reflects how well the coating resists them. A lifetime or PVD-style finish stays bright longer on a south-facing or roadside door, while a sheltered porch door can carry any finish you like. Matching the knob or lever below is mostly a matter of taste.

Does the locksmith keep any of my codes or my account details?

No. The administrator account is created by you, on your phone, with your email, and the codes are entered by you or read out by you and typed while you watch. The service note records the model, the door work and the keys cut, never a code or a password. If a technician programmed a temporary code for testing, it is deleted in front of you before the visit ends.
