Smart Lock Installation

There are four copies of the front-door key floating around: one with the cleaner, one with a neighbour, one on a hook at your parents' place, and one you honestly cannot account for. You would rather hand out codes you can switch off.

In plain words

For a landlord, a host or anyone who shares a door with people who come and go, the appeal is control without key cutting. Each tenant, guest, cleaner or contractor gets a code of their own, with a start and end date where the model allows, and removing someone takes seconds instead of a trip across town. The installation includes setting up that structure: an owner account, a small register of who holds what, and a routine for retiring codes at turnover. In a rented home the change is agreed with the tenant or landlord first, since both sides need a working way in.

The call
The rental turns over every few months and each time you drive across town to swap keys, then wonder whether copies were made. A lock with codes you can set and erase from your phone would end that cycle.

How the visit goes

  1. Scene 1

The other doors and the keys that stay

A smart lock rarely arrives alone; the back door, the garage entry and the side door still have keys, and the plan should include them. The locksmith asks which doors should share the new arrangement, whether the remaining mechanical locks share a keyway compatible with the smart lock's override so they can be rekeyed to one key, and where that key will live once the family stops carrying keys daily. If the household is dropping keys altogether, a lockbox for the override key or a second keypad becomes part of the conversation. Sorting this out at the start means the whole house ends up on one coherent system rather than a smart front door and a drawer of mismatched keys.

  2. Scene 2

Power up and teach the lock its door

Once the hardware is tight, the lock gets the batteries its maker specifies, all fresh and all the same type, since mixing old and new cells shortens the life of the set. Most models then run a short calibration in which the motor learns which way is locked, how far the bolt travels and where it meets resistance. The locksmith runs this exactly as that model's instructions direct, door open or closed depending on the maker, then cycles it several times from the keypad and the thumb-turn while listening for a motor that strains. If the lock has a door-position sensor or a magnet to fit on the frame, it is placed and confirmed at this stage.

  3. Scene 3

A door that locks with a tap and still takes a key

You come away with a front door that responds to a code, a phone or a fob, and, on a keyed model, still accepts a conventional key in the rekeyed override. The bolt slides home without a shoulder on the door because the alignment was corrected before the lock went on, and the reinforced strike holds it. Everything has been tested with the door closed: each code, the app from inside and outside the house, the auto-lock delay and, where the model has one, the key. The finish matches the rest of the hardware, the packaging and manual are left with you, and the old lock is either handed over or taken away as you prefer.

In the van

  • Mechanical override cylinder and repinning kit
  • Hinge shims and long hinge screws
  • Wi-Fi bridge or home hub
  • Adjustable-backset bolt and faceplate
  • Door-position sensor magnet

What shapes the quoteBrown Hill Locksmith Specialists

Taking over an existing smart lock
Resetting, re-enrolling and cleaning the permissions on a lock that came with the property is a different job from fitting new hardware: less cutting, more account work, and it is quoted on its own footing.
Finish and matching hardware
Standard finishes are the base. A less common finish, or replacing the knob or lever at the same time so the door matches, adds to the hardware portion of the quote.
Network setup
Joining the lock to Wi-Fi, adding a bridge because the signal at the door is weak, or pairing with an existing hub is setup time and sometimes an extra device, and appears in the quote as such.

Curious about the process?

Does the locksmith keep any of my codes or my account details?

No. The administrator account is created by you, on your phone, with your email, and the codes are entered by you or read out by you and typed while you watch. The service note records the model, the door work and the keys cut, never a code or a password. If a technician programmed a temporary code for testing, it is deleted in front of you before the visit ends.

What happens when the batteries die?

The lock warns you well before that point, with a light or tone at the keypad and, on connected models, a message to your phone. If the warnings are missed, a keyed model's mechanical override still opens the door, while a key-free model instead has two small contacts on the outside where a nine-volt battery gives it enough power to accept a code. The locksmith shows you each route your model offers and where the spare batteries and the key should live.

Will the new lock match my existing door hardware?

Smart locks come in the same finish families as ordinary hardware: satin nickel, matte black, aged bronze, polished brass and chrome. The locksmith matches the finish to your handle set, or swaps the handle at the same time so the door reads as one piece. Where an old finish has weathered to a shade no new part will match, replacing the knob or lever alongside the deadbolt is the tidy answer, and the two are often sold as a matching pair.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 28 in 100 homes · newer homes
  • About 28% of homes in East Gwillimbury were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.During construction many people hold a key: framers, finishers, painters, the sales office. Where homes are new, rekeying the exterior doors to a fresh key is the tidy way to close that chapter, and it takes a single visit.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 81% of homes in East Gwillimbury (2021 Census).Families in houses hand keys to children, cleaners, dog walkers and neighbours. A locksmith can set up a keypad on the side door for the household and keep the front door on a conventional key, so access matches how the family actually comes and goes.
